Creative Commons, innovative teaching of the digital licence
Title: Creative Commons
Educational stage: Second cycle in compulsory secondary education and First year at college
Subject: IT / Foreign languages / Technology / Languages and Literature
If there is a project representing the philosophy behind eTwinning, it is Creative Commons, a project that is popular for the double meaning of its title: a type of licence for digital publishing and edition, and a creative way to communicate and produce joint results.
At this regard, the work developed by schools Immaculata Instituut (Belgium) and IES Joaquín Costa (Spain) is well-known for the creativity of the tasks that both students and teachers have completed using Web 2.0 tools.
The idea of joining both ideas favours working on aspects beyond the more formal contents and objectives, such as gaining awareness of the importance of respecting intellectual property and responsibility when using resources on the net and the ones we make available to others.
Each student was responsible for creating and keeping a presentation blog including a short introduction of each student, a photo gallery, a survey on musical tastes, etc.
The project was structured into ten sections, including the following exercises: create your own blog using WordPress; include an introductory image in your blog; insert a presentation with Rock You; write an article in your blog; add a hit counter; modify your partners' photos; use the RSS news subscriber; classify the most popular contents in Google; add a survey; create a sound film; and carry out an assessment. In order to do so, a free resource bank was made available to help students with their work, as well as a tutorial to learn to use them easily.
We shall now show you one of the exercises promoting the knowledge and use of the Creative Commons licences:
Lastly, we must highlight the sustainability behind this project, whereby the materials created can be used by students from other years and teachers who are interested in getting started with Web 2.0. For this reason, this project has been given the National Award 2010. Click here to see a digital publication of the Spanish school.
