Project ideas from the eTwinning 2.0 course

From the National Support Service we want to congratulate all the teachers who have participated in the eTwinning 2.0 course during the second edition of the on-line ITE courses from 2010-2011. Although the permanent training of teachers has been recognized as necessary, this task is often made difficult because of lack of time. On this occasion many individuals have completed the course satisfactorily, and we hope that for the next edition, which will be in October, many more will participate. We will keep you informed from our web site.

One of the compulsory activities in the eTwinning 2.0 course is to design a working project using the document which the NSS has drawn up for this purpose (you can also find it in the section Useful documents, in Unit 4 of the course). Below we present a small sample of the projects which the teachers have carried out in this activity. We hope that they will serve as a source of inspiration for your projects.

The influence of latitude in our lives (Pablo Labraga López)

The aim of the project is to compare the length of the days and the nights in each country during one year, through partnerships of schools from the North and South of Europe which have different latitudes. The objective is that the students find out the latitude of their homes from the shadows that are projected and discover the influence that latitude and the inclination of the Earth’s axis have on the climate. This is undoubtedly a simple but attractive way to get pupils to understand the existence of the seasons of the year.

Taxes in the European Union (Yolanda Salinas Castelló)

Encouraging collaboration from the beginning of the project, the idea is to create mixed nationality groups, both Spanish and Luxembourgian, to exchange general data on both countries: general budget, sources of public financing, etc. These data, together with those from the European Union, will make it possible to analyze the economic and social situation of both countries in greater depth. The project will be considered completed when each group presents the conclusions of its research in its corresponding report. We are looking forward to reading these reports.

What are we listening to? (Diego José Vigueras González)

The aim of this project is to create several shared files on music: audio files with international recordings of music classified according to its characteristics, main type of music by country and comparison of the different types, of similar categories. In this way the participants can widen their knowledge about popular urban, folk and classical music.

Companies in Europe (Mercedes Arozarena Cañamares)

Designed to be carried out with the participation of at least six schools of different nationalities, this project consists in studying companies with foreign capital which work in each of the regions involved and the companies with local capital which have branches abroad. The final objective is to foment free movement in Europe in the educational and training sphere, to which end there is even a provision for the participating schools to establish collaborative networks with the companies studied. If only all students had the opportunity before joining the labour market to carry out projects like the one described in this example.

What programmes do our televisions offer? (Virginia Rodríguez)

In Spain it is common to hear complaints about the programming offered by the different television channels. By means of a well planned research project, the pupils who participate in this project will have the opportunity to get to know this programming in more detail, as well as to compare it with that existing in other European countries. The results of this research will permit the students to discover the social, political and economic reality of the participating countries. Will they succeed in improving television in the future?

How much can you buy with a euro? (Mª Mar Ibáñez Medrano)

By analyzing an action as simple and everyday as filling our shopping basket, the pupils will study and compare concepts like inflation, purchasing power, tastes and preferences of the individual, consumption habits, etc. To create a basic cheap common menu for two European countries will be a real challenge. We are looking forward to seeing how much this international shopping basket will cost us!
